The Design Thinking Revolution is a product of the Creative Process. Products like this can be made by taking students through the DT process, starting with creating the What If question, brainstorming prototypes, sketching, and then finally building their products using CAD software. Both the bowl and the spoon are the products of the lesson: Re-imagining the Ordinary and Everyday: Home Edition. This project was created with 3D modeling software. View it online Bowl: https://www.cad-designer.com/design/20UiDNsOgIn Spoon: http://www.design-spaces.com/project/1622518 How I Designed This Overview and Background The goal of this activity and lesson is to take students through the design thinking process to rethink the possibilities for everyday household items. What are the inadequacies of home life? How can home product design be improved? Let's change the world with simple designs and products, printed out and prototyped with a 3D printer! Lesson Plan and Activity Once they have their What If question individuals will complete the following for their question (adapted from Brainstorm in a Box): (15 min) Give your idea a title. Explain your idea in one sentence. Identify the need or problem you are trying to solve. Identify who will benefit from your idea. Vote: Post the idea sheets around the room and hand out three color stickers (red, blue, and green) Blue = doable Green = maybe Red = Nope Students then take their stickers and place them by all of their different ideas. (10 min) Students return to their original small group and discuss and choose one idea to continue with as a group. They should be sure to consider the feasibility and the size of the audience that will benefit. Explain to the whole group that it is encouraged for the whole group to ask questions for clarification. Model this by asking a group how might we do this? Why might we do this? Begin sketching prototype Group members may approach the problem in different ways. Each student should sketch their solution to the problem. Group members may collaborate on a solution if desired. Day 3 - ?: Begin CAD Design Students use CAD software to develop the prototypes of their ideas. At this point, students may need to print out their designs and redesign several times before settling on their final solution. Skills Learned Standards MS-ETS1-1 MS-ETS1-2 MS-ETS1-3 MS-ETS1-4 Rubric and Assessment In the end, students should have designed and printed an original piece that is the solution to the What If question they brainstormed in the beginning. You can use the below rubric to assess their level of depth in regards to problem solving.
