The M1879 Reichsrevolver and the Model 1883 were German service revolvers used by the military from 1879 to 1908. The Luger replaced them in 1908. Only one difference exists between these two revolver models - barrel length. The Model 1883 had a 5-inch barrel. Although the design was outdated, this weapon remained extremely durable and continued to be used during World War I. Collectors refer to the M1879 as the cavalry model and the M1883 as the officer's model. Both models were single-action revolvers with solid frames that held six shots. They fired a 10.6x25mmR cartridge, equivalent in size and power to the .44 Russian round of their time. To load these revolvers, users opened a gate on the right side. The cylinder was released by pulling the hammer back to half-cock position. Removing empty cartridges required withdrawing the axis pin and then removing the casings by hand. However, a separate rod stored in the ammunition pouch facilitated this process without needing to remove the cylinder. These revolvers featured a safety lever that often applied when the hammer rested at half-cock position.
