This system has been engineered to deliver an efficient solution for regolith extraction within the framework of the NASA Regolith Advanced Surface Systems Operations Robot (RASSOR) Bucket Drum Design Challenge project. The presented solution features a lightweight and highly efficient design. The rotary bucket design offers a friction-minimized solution. These buckets are mounted on axes, returning to their initial position thanks to integrated "leaf springs" mounted in their axes. The primary cam optimizes the kinematics of regolith discharge into the central tank. The central tank remains horizontal with an opening at the top throughout the entire filling phase.Activated by a belt inside the arm, the tank then empties its contents. An additional belt drives the buckets in rotation to empty them one by one. A carbon-titanium-magnesium 3D printable composite bearing system is utilized. The maximum filling capacity of each drum is 22.4 liters.
