Monks were divided into groups of six and sat around tables on circular benches. The abbot sat at one table with senior monks, while the other tables were also seated according to rank. As the number of monks grew between mid-10th and mid-12th centuries, a neighboring room was converted into another refectory with more round benches. The Ghazali monks ate well: they frequently consumed beef, pork, gazelle meat, poultry, sorghum, and purslane.
