Reef Net Site Anchor Stone
sketchfab
This massive anchor stone, approximately 0.5 meters wide, was observed at Smyth Head, a reef net fishing site on the Salish Sea. Given its enormous size and the hole carved into it, this is likely a canoe anchor stone that would have required significant effort to create. A considerable amount of time and labor would have been involved in pecking and carving the hole, making this a valuable object that was lost accidentally. Reef netting is a distinctive fishing method employed by the Coast Salish people. It involves setting complex nets between two canoes along constricted areas where salmon migrate. Using this method, thousands of salmon could be caught per day, providing a reliable source of food for the community. Captured from 1080p video recorded underwater by Ewan Anderson in October 2019, this image is one of 186 taken from a single recording session.
