Reed switch

A reed switch is an electromagnetic device, invented in 1936 by W. B. Ellwood at Bell Telephone Laboratories, featuring ferrous metal reeds with contacts in a sealed glass envelope. The normally open or closed contacts respond to magnetic field presence or absence. Activated by a coil for relay purposes or nearby magnet proximity, the switch reverts to its initial state post-magnet removal. A burglar alarm's proximity detector is one such application of this switch.
