A gathering of unofficial delegates from 16 nations formally endorsed the red cross on a white background as an international symbol of protection in 1863. This landmark conference drafted 10 pivotal resolutions, thereby establishing the International Red Cross Movement. The red cross emblem was chosen specifically to safeguard medical personnel volunteering with national relief organizations, which eventually evolved into the National Red Cross, Red Crescent and Red Crystal Societies. Interestingly, the reverse image of the Swiss flag serves as this emblem, and it has never been intended nor does it carry any spiritual significance whatsoever.
