The red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is a native inhabitant of the eastern half of the United States, calling the region its home. These forest birds are incredibly adaptable, making themselves right at home in a wide range of habitats, from swampy woodland to diverse mixed pine/hardwood forests. Unlike many other bird species, the red-bellied woodpecker does not migrate, choosing instead to stay put year-round. During mating season, these birds are committed to monogamy, but they do not remain faithful to one partner for life. In order to attract a female mate, males will often tap on trees, call out loudly, and drum with enthusiasm.
