Reclining Pan

Reclining Pan

In this magnificent sculpture, Pan reclines effortlessly on a rugged base amidst lush grape clusters and vines. His left hand firmly grasps a goatskin called a nebris that he wears proudly around his neck. Such precise details, combined with the tiny salamander carved intricately among the rocks, bring to life a rustic scene perfectly suited to Pan, the renowned half-goat-half-human god of the woods, fields, and flocks, infamous for his reckless amorous pursuits. The reed pipe, or syrinx, held securely in Pan's right hand is a poignant allusion to the maiden Syrinx, who was transformed into a patch of reeds to evade the satyr's relentless advances. This masterpiece was crafted by Francesco da Sangallo from a repurposed ancient marble and once served as a fountain; its water spout still visible at the mouth of the sack above his right arm.
