NEW DESIGN: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5036995

A design I made inspired by F1 rear wings. The build prints in three parts. I designed this model to mount on my bicycle helmet for fun. (Specifically I own the KASK Mojito X).

Print took 28 hours in total using high quality print settings in CURA.

How I Designed This

I made the design to be as easy as possible to print, whilst keeping support filament to a minimum, but still retaining the wide 2019-style F1 aesthetics.

The rear wing elements are designed to have as little overhang as possible for the airfoils, but requires support structure under the sideplates, where the two bolt holes are located.

Each side of the wings have male/female notches to connect both rear wing elements together with a 0,1mm clearance in each direction. Adhesive can be applied inside the notches to keep the wings solidified together. I recommed epoxy glue.

The base is designed to be printed with as much stiffness as possible whilst not requiring high innfill density. The open spaces in the base give the thin walls a solid structure with the shell layers. The two large open holes are meant to use with zip ties which connect with the helmet's ventilation holes it is mounted to. The bottom is angled 10 degrees to keep the wings in the correct angle with respect to the helmet contour.

Required standard components

4pcs M4x20 bolts

8pcs M4 washers OD: 9mm

4pcs M4 nuts (preferrably locknuts)

Observations

Wind gusts are much more sensitive when in motion.

Helmet will get pulled back at moderate speed.

Even when standing still, wind will still affect drag of wing on helmet. The effect of wind on the wings is greater than anticipated.

For light helmets, the wing assembly is much more prone to change the center mass of the entire helmet. My own helmet with wings attached is 421 grams with the wing assembly adding up to 160 grams in itself.

Changelog

18.09.2019

Added non-frangible mount; "connecting_baseV4.stl"

Category: Engineering
