I tightened up the original axles by creating larger ones, which fit snugly onto the 3mm rod. To ensure the splines remained engaged, I added a 3mm axle collar that slips neatly into place just inside the bearing retainer. Two 2.5mm nuts and set screws keep everything securely locked in position.
