The human body's internal framework, the skeleton, consists of approximately 270 bones at birth. This number gradually decreases to about 206 bones as some bones merge into a single unit during adulthood. By the time people reach their early twenties, bone mass has achieved its peak density. The human skeleton is comprised of two main categories: the axial and appendicular skeletons. The axial skeleton is formed by a series of interconnected vertebrae in the spine, rib cage, and skull. Associated bones include those that support the cranium and thorax. On the other hand, the appendicular skeleton attaches to the axial framework via four limbs. This category includes both upper limb elements such as shoulders and forearms, and lower limbs like legs and ankles. Human skeletons provide six primary functions. The main roles include providing structural integrity through supporting weight; facilitating physical movement; safeguarding internal organs; generating red blood cells in bones; storing essential minerals necessary for healthy functioning; and playing a regulatory role by influencing hormone secretion from glands within the skeletal system. In contrast to some other primates, human skeletons are less prone to dimorphism related to sexual differences. Although slight disparities between male and female skeleton elements do exist across specific skull features, dental structures, long bones, and pelvis morphology. Female body parts generally appear smaller in size compared to corresponding male counterparts within any given population. Notably, the pelvic structure in females is different from that of males to accommodate childbirth. Conversely, humans display an uncommon trait - males lack bony extensions supporting their reproductive organs, unlike many other primates which exhibit distinct skeletal features for sexual differentiation.
