Human constructed in 1385 Its awe-inspiring dimensions, its moat, its drawbridges and its towers date back to that distant era. An elevated covered walkway, which still stands today, connected the fortified building to the marquises' Palace, now known as Palazzo Municipale. Centuries passed and the threat of unrest dissipated. Consequently, the castle evolved into a majestic residence for the court and was enhanced with rooftop promenades atop the towers, marble balconies, an opulent Renaissance-style courtyard (at the time fully adorned with frescoes) and luxurious apartments. The imposing towers dominate each corner of the Castle, symbols of the grandeur of the Este Family: the Torre di Santa Caterina; the magnificent Torre dei Leoni, from which you can admire the panoramic view of Ferrara (you may ascend to the top during your visit to the Castle); the Torre Marchesana; the Torre di San Paolo.
