A nuclear reactor, a device long referred to as an atomic pile, is designed to initiate and control self-sustaining nuclear chain reactions. These reactors are employed at nuclear power plants for generating electricity and in marine propulsion systems that utilize nuclear energy. The intense heat produced by nuclear fission is transferred to a working fluid (typically water or gas), which then flows through steam turbines. These turbines either propel ships or turn the shafts of electrical generators. Nuclear-generated steam has the potential to be utilized for industrial process heating or district heating applications.
