A seat is a kind of furniture designed for one person to sit on, typically featuring a back and sometimes armrests. Chairs also commonly have four legs that support the seat above the floor. Without a back and armrests, it's called a stool. A chair meant for more than one person is known as a couch, sofa, settee, loveseat, recliner or bench. A separate footrest for a chair is referred to as an ottoman, hassock or pouffe. In vehicles or theaters, a mounted seat is simply called a seat. Chairs designed for everyday use are typically movable. The history of the chair dates back thousands of years. Although it was initially used by royalty and those in positions of power, it didn't become a common household item until the 16th century. For centuries, chests, benches and stools were the primary seats people used in their daily lives. Only a few chairs from earlier times have survived, mainly because they belonged to churches or nobility. Our understanding of ancient chairs comes from monuments, sculptures and paintings. A few authentic examples can be found in museums like the British Museum and the Egyptian Museum at Cairo.
