Set on external face of the N jamb of a late medieval window, on the west gable of Rathclone church (Patrick F. O'Donovan Archaeology.ie). A small carving sits proudly in place. Oval-shaped head takes center stage. Hair or a headdress boasts a distinctive flattop and edge set back from the forehead, adding to its overall mystique. Face shows signs of damage, but eyes still manage to convey emotion as rectangular bumps (eyebrows) with hollows beneath take on a life of their own. A broken nose adds to the carving's rugged charm. Mouth curves upwards in a cheerful smile, open to the right. The child is poised in mid-air, suspended by invisible strings. Thick and triangular neck supports the body, while flat clavicle provides a striking contrast. Short arms are folded below on chest, hands touching towards the right in a gentle gesture. No breasts are visible, adding to the enigmatic nature of the carving. Two wing-like features extend from the clavicle, adorned with three ridges that resemble possible ribs. A defined area marks the genitals, separating it from the waist. Damaged or detached legs point outwards, as if frozen in mid-air. Feet seem to be struggling to find purchase. The vulva extends from the waist as a deep vertical slot, adding to the carving's sense of mystery. Design above the genitals may suggest that the carving is wearing a dress raised high, exposing its intimate secrets. Lines above the hands crease and fold, telling a story all their own.
