Rath - CL025-084006- Sculptured Stone
sketchfab
A carved stone of a seated male figure is positioned sideways into the southeast wall of Rath church. Only one face of the stone is visible, but it's possible to envision the complete carving by reflecting its appearance on either side. The carving is documented as a sculpted stone, although it might actually be an exhibitionistic figure. Originally laid horizontally with two faces exposed, the eastern face features a bearded man in profile, seated on a stool and clasping his knee. The figure is encircled within a semicircular frame, positioned at an angle. Further examination suggests that the carving was created on the upper surface (now concealed) and must have been originally set upright, showcasing the entire figure across two adjacent faces within an almond-shaped border. It's possible that this stone served as a cornerstone from a doorway or chancel arch, or perhaps it originated from an exterior corner of the church (Harbison, 1987, 7-9).
