Raphael, or Raph, bursts onto the scene as one of four fictional heroes in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and related media. In Mirage/Image Comics, all four turtles sport red bandanas over their eyes, but Raphael stands out by keeping his red bandana while his brothers don't. His go-to weapon is twin sai, which he wields with precision - in the Next Mutation series, his sai transform into a staff-like weapon. Raphael is notorious for experiencing intense emotions and often comes across as aggressive, sullen, maddened, and rebellious. The roots of his anger are rarely explored, but in some versions it's clear that being an outcast among his kind has left him feeling isolated. His complicated relationship with older brother Leonardo adds fuel to the fire, as Raphael sees Leonardo as the group's leader and feels overshadowed by him. Raphael earns his name from the renowned 16th-century Italian painter, and in 2011 he ranked 23rd on IGN's Top 100 Comic Book Heroes list - a distinction that eluded his brothers.
