sketchfab
See the remarkable collection of Ornamental Stones from Ylämaa, Finland. Locality number 2035 measures 12 x 6 x 2 cm in size. This unique specimen is classified as an Igneous intrusive (plutonic) rock type. The Rapakivi Granites are visually striking and unusual varieties of Granite that have been reported to exhibit the same chemistry and mineralogy as ordinary Granites, but they are strongly porphyritic, featuring large spheroidal K-Feldspar masses. This specimen is a classical example of Baltic Brown Granite - a variety of Rapakivi Granite characterized by viborgitic texture (known as Wiborgite), with ovoids having a rim of plagioclase. Essential minerals present include quartz, potassic feldspar (orthoclase, microcline), ± plagioclase, and biotite. Further information can be found at the website http://geology.uaic.ro/muzee/mineralogie/. The concept and 3D-modelling of this specimen were created by dr. Andrei Ionut APOPEI.
