Saccharomyces cerevisiae activates protein 1 (RAP1), it's the leading DNA-binding protein found in yeast telomeres. Telomeres are specialized segments of DNA consisting of short tandem repeats that top eukaryotic linear chromosomes. As such, they carry out essential roles in chromosome upkeep, stability, and transcription. They're highly dynamic as their length changes; this is believed to be linked to aging and cancers. RAP1 has been shown to function as both a repressor and activator of transcription. RAP1 is a massive 827 amino acid protein, however, only a small part of it forms the DNA-binding Domain (RAP1-DBD) which we'll focus on.
