Random polyhedron planters

Random polyhedron planters

thingiverse

This is a compilation of several polyhedron-like planters or vases generated procedurally with MATLAB R2016a. They were created using vectors from origin as normal vectors of the faces, so any face is normal to the center of the pot. Every face has the same distance from the center, except for the top and bottom face, which are 75% from the center compared to the other faces. Each planter has a spiralized-vase version for this kind of printing tagged as "spiral". Here's a depiction of every model to understand the idea behind this:

False dodecahedron: Thingiverse is full of dodecahedron planters; I made this model as a test of my MATLAB script. To create this model, I defined some faces to point alternately between the north and south at some elevation angle all around, describing a revolution. It's not a true regular dodecahedron because the faces are not equal to each other, and it's not even a dodecahedron at all because it doesn't have 12 faces.

Random polyhedron 20: A polyhedron with faces in truly random directions restricted to a range of latitude angle. "20" is the number of faces, excluding the top and bottom. After determining the direction of the faces randomly, they could overlap as well as be apart from each other.

Random polyhedron 40: Similar to the previous one but with 40 faces.

Random polyhedron distributed: Still random, but it's ensured that at least in some degree, the directions of the faces are distributed along latitude and longitude.

Pointy polyhedron: Now, the faces are distributed in a sinusoidal function. Every point has its radius coordinate powered by a positive exponent, so the edges grow exponentially.

Bubble polyhedron: Similar to prior one but using a negative exponent.

Check my other planter designs on Thingiverse. I spend part of my time creating these models and making them available for everyone. If you want to support my work, you can contribute with me here.
