Rancilio Rocky 15° Tilt Base
prusaprinters

An angled base with a removable platter and a couple dosing cups to make the old Rocky look and work a bit like a Niche Zero. This base replaces the stock baseplate on the Rocky and re-uses the stock hardware. Both power switches are still accessible with the base installed.

I based this model on the 45° mod on Thingiverse which is great, but takes up a lot of counter space. At only 15° the base doesn't noticeably improve retention for me, but it does help make the the output more consistent (if I put 40g in the hopper I usually get 40g out). Two dosing cups are available: One that matches the dimensions and look of the original Niche Zero dosing cup, and one that's a little larger that I use for grinding larger doses for drip coffee.

The mounting holes on the 45° base Fusion360 model weren't quite in the right spot, but did work. I adjusted the holes after printing and measuring my Rocky to be closer, but they have not been tested. If you print the base please comment and let me know how it fits!

Food Safety

Printing a part from food safe plastic does not make it food safe! The surface of FDM 3D prints traps bacteria and is usually not water-tight, even if it looks like it is.

Because the dosing cups are in frequent contact with coffee they must be coated with a food contact rated epoxy. Consider coating the base and the platter as well for easier cleaning. The cup, platter, and base in the pictures is coated with MAX CLR which is formulated for direct food contact in accordance with FDA regulations. Always follow all manufacturer curing and use guidelines to ensure the finish is food safe. Be sure to wash the part with warm soapy water after the epoxy cures before using.

Printing Recommendations

All parts can be printed without supports with just a little bridging. The base takes a substantial amount of material, and barely fit on my Prusa i3 MK3S.
