Ovis is a genus of sheep that belongs to the family Bovidae and order Artiodactyla. There are six recognized species of Ovis: Argali (Ovis ammon), Mouflon (Ovis orientalis), Urial (Ovis vignei), Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis), Dall Sheep (Ovis dalli), and Snow Sheep (Ovis nivicola). Argali, the largest species of sheep, is found in Central Asia and has a distinctive curved horn. Mouflon is found in Europe and North Africa and is characterized by its black coat and white markings. Urial is found in South Asia and has a reddish-brown coat. Bighorn Sheep is found in North America and is known for its impressive horns, which can grow up to 3 feet long. Dall Sheep is also found in North America and has a distinctive pale gray coat. Snow Sheep is found in the Arctic regions of North America and Russia and has a white coat that helps it blend in with its snowy surroundings. Ovis sheep are social animals that live in flocks, which can range in size from a few individuals to several hundred. These flocks are usually led by a dominant male, who defends his territory against other males during the rutting season. Mating in Ovis is characterized by males competing for females in estrus. Dominant males with large horns and body size have an advantage over smaller males. Females typically choose dominant males based on these characteristics, which are desirable in offspring. In addition to their impressive horns and social behavior, Ovis sheep have also been the subject of various scientific studies. For example, research has shown that age-dependent sexual selection plays a key role in determining the reproductive success of Bighorn Rams.
