Vostok is a powerful three-stage rocket designed to propel spaceships into orbit; all its stages are fueled by liquid propellants. With the aid of the Vostok launch vehicle, numerous spacecraft within the Vostok series, as well as Luna-1 through Luna-3 and select artificial satellites from the Kosmos, Meteor, and Electron series, have been successfully placed into orbit. The maiden launch attempt on September 23, 1958, unfortunately ended in failure, but the first successful launch took place on January 2, 1959. A major milestone was achieved when the Vostok launch vehicle carried the first manned spacecraft into space on April 12, 1961. It is a member of the highly reliable R-7 family of rockets.
