As a founder of the influential Rajneesh movement, he defied traditional norms with his revolutionary ideas that spread throughout India during his remarkable public speaking career in the 1960s. Here, he built on his spiritual vision by discussing profound topics that touched the lives of seekers from far and wide. Moving to Pune in 1974 allowed him to expand on this work even further.[11] With an influx of Westerners who came seeking self-improvement experiences that often incorporated aspects of human potential theories,[12] tensions eventually developed between local officials representing the ruling government led by Prime Minister Morarji Desai, which resulted in major setbacks to the growth of Rajneesh's Pune Ashram including millions lost due to unpaid back taxes.[13][14]
