Rainbow Warrior Shipwreck

A 3D model of the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior was produced in 2020 as part of an archaeological investigation into its current state. The French navy struggled with non-violent protest tactics from activist vessels trying to stop nuclear testing at the Moruroa Atoll, prompting them to launch "Operation Satanique" in 1985. Secret agents were sent to New Zealand to sink the Rainbow Warrior in Auckland Harbour before it could lead a flotilla of protesters. In 2019, a GIRT survey was conducted on the Rainbow Warrior with three main goals in mind: Firstly, to establish a baseline understanding of its condition. Secondly, to demonstrate how public archaeology and citizen science can systematically monitor underwater cultural heritage sites across New Zealand. Thirdly, as a case study to showcase the effectiveness of the GIRT survey methodology in guiding underwater cultural heritage management decisions.
