I stumbled upon this Rainbow Light Show kit on Adafruit's website (https://www.adafruit.com/products/2602) and thought it looked incredibly cool. The lights shift down the strip in a marquee-style manner, and you control the color and brightness by waving your hands over IR sensors, making it a form of kinetic art that's loads of fun to play with. After I built it, I knew my 4-year-old niece would absolutely love playing with it. However, the base, although nicely designed, wasn't robust enough for a 4-year-old, so I decided to model a sturdier one using 123D Design. I also swapped out the original 16 LED strip for a 60 LED strip from Adafruit (https://www.adafruit.com/products/1461). To do this, simply remove the original strip and connect the longer one - no configuration needed. The static pictures don't do the LEDs justice; they are extremely intense even in a bright room. I recorded a short video of the Rainbow in action: https://youtu.be/KHkgz6m1gns Printing: I used Printrbot Gray PLA at 195C. It contrasted nicely with the black bezel provided in the kit and matched the laser-cut graphics on top. I printed at a .3mm layer height with 20% infill. Assembly: The button fits loosely in the hole on the side of the enclosure. Insert it just before you screw the circuit board into place, and it should rest against the reset switch. You'll hear a click when you press and release the switch. The holes in the screw columns are sized for the 2 screws that came with the kit. Be careful to cut threads in them by slowly running the screws down into the holes before assembling the unit. One mod you might consider is adding a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack beside the power plug, then connect the LED strip to a corresponding plug to enable you to remove the LED strip from the controller.
