The main railway station in Pécs is situated east-west, built in a late eclectic style between 1898-1900. Ferenc Pfaff, chief architect for MÁV at the time, created the building's design featuring ceramic embellishments. Pfaff had a knack for designing stations and is responsible for many notable railway structures including those in Kaposvár, Zagreb, Timisoara, Arad, and Cegléd. Notably, Pécs' yellow brick building boasts ceramic ornament panels that accentuate its elegant profile when placed along its side. A striking element of the building are the pyrogranite circular reliefs located at the entrances of both the north and south sides, displaying the likenesses of James Watt and George Stephenson in a highly decorative manner crafted by Ármin Klein from Zsolnay Factory designs. The 5,332-square-meter base encompasses various station facilities such as commercial areas, telegraph offices, and master-station houses among others. In 2014, the comprehensive restoration process was initiated using European Union funds aimed at refreshing the building's façade in accordance with strict preservation guidelines. An emphasis was placed on replicating intricate facade ornaments including shields, coats of arms, post office signs, arch lintels, festoons, lion-head details and various rosette and console pieces along with a complete overhaul of the sills. Additionally, reception halls are to undergo modernization by 2015 ensuring that passenger areas are refurbished and revitalized to resemble their original grandeur.
