Rails for Reclaimed Refrigerator Drawer
pinshape
I cleaned up an old refrigerator drawer at work because it was being thrown away without knowing its story, so I decided to repurpose it as a rail system for my 3D printer workbench to hold my 3D printing tools. If you check out the pictures, you'll see that my bench has a 3/4-inch plywood sheet on top of a 2x4 frame; the frames screw into the bottom of the plywood and one side of one of the 2x4s of the frame. I color-coded the design so you can easily build it if you want to. Here's what you need for each side, mirroring everything for the right-side rail: Yellow - Front Bracket (1) White - Front Lock (1) Green - Front Rail (1) Black - Back Rail (1) Red - Back Bracket (2) Minimum #4 screws required (12) Instructions: Everything should be a friction fit, so you'll need to clean up any edges where things have to fit together. I even had to use some force after sanding down all the edges and using my scraper tool to clean up the inside corners of the dovetail joints. After fitting everything together, align one rail with the drawer in the closed position, leaving enough room so that the drawer doesn't stick out past the 2x4. Remove the drawer and mark off where you want the rail brackets to sit. Screw in one side all the way. Then attach the other rail to the drawer and slide it into place, again in the closed position, to mark off where the other brackets will mount. Remove the drawer and screw the second rail into place. Now you should be able to slide the drawer all the way in. Next, place the clip in place by fitting it over the top of the front rail where there's a space, and use some force to pop the clip into the bottom while being careful not to break the rail. This clip keeps the drawer from tipping out of the rail system when the drawer is completely open. I only needed one of them. For that one person who needs this exact design, here it is.
