The initial item was a contemporary train trip on the Wolverine from Birmingham, Michigan to Chicago, en route to Milwaukee, which I had also experienced as a three-month-old baby in 1943. To secure my boiler and firebox assembly, I needed a mate based on mass rather than creating jigs and fixtures. Attaching it to a base allowed for stability without obstructing sling stays. My knowledge came from Keenan & Keynes steam tables in 1962 and John Thompson's products of combustion data in 1981, both crucial for my engineering endeavors.
