Railing pillar
myminifactory
Railing pillar carved in limestone (‘Palnad marble’) with lotus medallions and narrative reliefs stands proudly on display. The outer face of this masterpiece reveals a stunning lotus in the middle medallion, while the upper fluted area is unfortunately broken. However, in the lower fluted area, dancing ganas in clouds add a touch of whimsy to an otherwise serene scene. Meanwhile, the inner face tells a more poignant story with the Great Departure of Prince Siddhartha from Kapilavastu taking center stage in the middle medallion. The upper fluted area may be damaged, but it still manages to convey the sense of devotion and worship emanating from the worshippers depicted within. On the other hand, flying devas on the left side of the lower fluted area eagerly await Prince Siddhartha as he takes his leave of Chandaka (his groom) and Kanthaka (his horse), while on the right side, the first sermon is beautifully captured with the wheel (dharmachakra) above a throne adorned with deer on either side.
