RailBox Burr Puzzle - Level 18
thingiverse
This is a challenging puzzle made up of interlocking pieces with distinct notches, where the objective is to disassemble all the components. These puzzles are traditionally crafted by hand from wood, making them pricey; however, with 3D printing technology, they can be acquired at a lower cost due to tolerances, although handmade wood ones might have superior quality. The term "level of the puzzle" refers to the minimum number of movements required to remove the first piece. While this provides an approximate idea of puzzle difficulty, some puzzles may feature more intricate movement combinations or harder-to-spot movements. In this instance, I created a CAD model of the RailBox puzzle by Yavuz Demirhan, which is an 18-level puzzle suitable for beginners yet still challenging enough to provide fun for a while. You can watch how this puzzle functions in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiKhM7Q2Yqw Printing instructions The pieces have a 0.1mm tolerance on each face, and the cage has a 0.15mm tolerance. Your printer should be well-calibrated to ensure that the pieces fit correctly. These small tolerances are necessary because if the pieces were loose, they could move unintentionally, revealing the solution by mistake. Printed at 0.2mm, I reduced the default speed parameters slightly to avoid any ghosting. The cage was printed with support material, and the rough surface in contact with the supports required a little sanding. Assembly instructions To assemble the puzzle, there is a program called Burr Tools that provides all possible combinations of the pieces, the number of moves needed, and guides you through the assembly/disassembly process step by step. This tool accepts .xmpuzzle files (included). Here is a link to the download page: http://burrtools.sourceforge.net/ And here is a small tutorial explaining how to view the solution of the puzzle with this program: https://youtu.be/pQ6K7uJKFMw It's highly recommended that you ask another person to assemble the puzzle, so you don't get any clues on how to solve it afterwards. Regarding using the program to find the solution: "Solutions are like narcotics; you're encouraged to stay away." Copyright The design of this puzzle was obtained from puzzlewillbeplayed.com.
