"On May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh made the world's first transatlantic flight." He made efforts to raise funds to purchase a "Wright Belanca airplane" equipped with the "Wright Whirlwind engine", and although he managed to negotiate the purchase, his piloting was not recognized and the negotiations broke down. Therefore, he contracted with then-unknown Ryan Airlines (San Diego, California), and jointly developed an aircraft specialized for transatlantic flights based on the company's "single-engine postal airplane" equipped with the same engine. The aircraft was named "NYP-1" and nicknamed "Spirit of St. Louis". After completing the "NYP-1", he successfully completed a transcontinental flight from San Diego to St. Louis to New York, and he suddenly became a person of the moment because of expectations for a transatlantic flight that had continued to fail and have accidents until then. Based on the results of this transcontinental flight, an inlet heater was added to the engine, and the automatic lubricating device for the rocker arm bearings was also added. He left New York on May 20, 1927, and arrived in Paris in 33 hours and 30 minutes while battling sleepiness for 5,810 km. His book "Spirit of St. Louis" (Japanese translation "翼よ, あれがパリの灯だ") has been made into a movie and is famous all over the world. This is the functional model of the "Wright Whirlwind J-5" (220HP, 2200RPM) that succeeded in this historic flight. A.
