A radial engine, an internal combustion reciprocating type, has cylinders radiating outwards from a central crankcase like the spokes of a wheel. It is reminiscent of a star or "star engine" (Sternmotor in German, moteur en étoile in French, hoshigata enjin in Japanese) and was frequently employed for aircraft engines prior to gas turbines' prevalence.
