This is a device known as a rack and pinion, consisting of a straight bar called a "rack" attached to a wheel called a "pinion." The pinion has teeth that mesh perfectly with the rack's teeth. When the pinion turns, it pushes or pulls the rack along its length, making it move in a linear motion.
