A rack and pinion mechanism consists of two gears, with one being a linear bar (the rack) and the other a circular gear (the pinion). When rotational motion is applied to the pinion, it engages teeth on the rack and causes the rack to move linearly. In a rack railway, this principle is utilized as locomotives or railcars rotate their pinions, which engage with racks between the tracks to propel trains up steep inclines. Furthermore, for every pair of conjugate involute profiles, there exists a basic rack that represents the profile of its corresponding gear of infinite pitch radius.
