Raccoon Baculum worn as Pendant (VCU_3D_2136)
sketchfab
This raccoon baculum, or penis bone, boasts a distinctive groove near one end - a feature that strongly implies a cord was once secured around the object, likely forming a necklace. Given male raccoons' notorious reputation for sexual aggression, this artifact may well have served as a fertility symbol. Excavated archaeologically from George Washington's Mount Vernon House for Families, this specimen underwent 3D scanning with a NextEngine Desktop 3D scanner in the lab located at George Washington's Mount Vernon. The digital model was generously provided by Virginia Commonwealth University student Jessica Evans and courtesy of the Virtual Curation Laboratory in association with the esteemed Mount Vernon Ladies Association.
