R2-D2, also known as Artoo-Detoo, is a beloved droid character in the Star Wars franchise created by visionary filmmaker George Lucas. He has appeared in an impressive nine out of ten Star Wars films to date, making him one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history. Throughout the course of the films, R2 has formed lasting bonds with an array of legendary characters, including C-3PO, Padmé Amidala, Anakin Skywalker, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, BB-8, and Rey. Renowned English actor Kenny Baker brought R2-D2 to life in all three original Star Wars films, earning billing credit for the character in the prequel trilogy. Although Baker's role was reduced as R2-D2 was primarily portrayed through radio-controlled props and CGI models, he remained an integral part of the franchise. In the sequel trilogy, Baker served as a consultant on The Force Awakens, while Jimmy Vee co-performed the character in select scenes. Vee later took over the role beginning with The Last Jedi. R2-D2's design was masterfully crafted by Ralph McQuarrie in his artwork, co-developed by John Stears and built by Peteric Engineering. The revised Empire Strikes Back droids were constructed by Tony Dyson, who also founded Rocking Horse Toy Company. Ben Burtt expertly created R2-D2's distinctive sounds and vocal effects. The model of R2-D2 requires careful assembly with a strong adhesive to ensure its durability and longevity.
