Quilt Wall Hanging Frame
thingiverse
My wife crafted a beautiful quilted art piece several years ago, but we lacked an elegant way to showcase it. Traditional picture frames often failed us, as stretching a quilt within their confines proved tricky, and most frames were aesthetically unpleasing. My wife issued a challenge: design a 3D printed frame that would enhance her quilt's beauty while being simple to create, fitting snugly on my 6-inch square 3D print table. To meet this demand, I designed an outer frame with rounded edges, exactly 6 inches tall and slightly narrower, mirroring the proportions of the quilt she had meticulously crafted. This harmonious design allowed ample space for handling the batting material within the quilt. Next, I created an inner frame that the quilt would stretch over, leaving a 1.5mm gap between it and the outer frame to "pinch" the artwork, thus ensuring a taut display. A mounting post at one end enabled easy hanging on a wall nail. The quilt's fabric layers, with batting in between, posed a challenge: if left uncompressed, this excess material would cause the frame to sag away from the wall when hung. To resolve this issue, I designed a batting compression frame that snaps onto the inner frame, gently compressing and folding over the batting to prevent it from extending beyond the outer frame's edges. This clever design contained the entire framing package. I chose red T-glase for the outer frame, but any color could be used to complement the artwork. The inner frames, on the other hand, can be any color since they remain invisible. I prefer using PETG due to its flexibility and ease of workability.
