Quick plotter mod for Wanhao i3 and clones
thingiverse
This simple mod converts a 3D printer into a pen plotter. I took a straightforward approach when creating this, aiming for simplicity and speed. This conversion replaces the part cooling fan, requiring only removal of the fan rather than the entire extruder assembly. However, taking a simple approach has its drawbacks. First, the pen is offset from the extruder, necessitating consideration when setting up an image to be printed. Second, good bed leveling abilities are essential, as this setup is not spring-loaded and requires a level bed. I've included two files for download: one compatible with my Wanhao v2 printer and another for v2.1 printers. I don't own a v2.1 myself but based my file on what a friend told me. You can watch this video of the mod in use at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHzM3ZcmNuc. Custom Section: Hardware Needed To install this mod, you'll need just a few items. First, acquire a pen – I used a 1.0mm Paper Mate on my printer. Next, obtain three zip-ties to secure the pen to its mount; I made the zip-tie holes 3mm wide and purchased them from Lowes at https://www.lowes.com/pd/Utilitech-100-Pack-4-in-Nylon-Cable-Ties/999929928. Finally, you'll need a way to attach the part to your printer – I used wing nuts and 10mm M3 screws but may be able to use stock fan screws or even the stock fan duct in their place. Custom Section: Software/Gcode To generate the necessary gcode, I followed Tech2C's YouTube video, which shows how to convert a hypercube and create gcode using Cura.
