Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee: 22 June 1887

From the Diary of Queen Victoria. Golden Jubilee: 22 June 1887, at Windsor Castle The train stopped at Slough and we got out there, where different ladies and gentlemen were presented and bouquets were handed to us. Then we drove off with an escort to Windsor. Along the road, decorations and crowds of people lined up. Before arriving in Eton, a beautiful triumphal arch was set up, made to look exactly like part of the old College, and boys dressed as old Templars stood on top of it, playing a regular fanfare. The whole effect was stunning, lit up by the sun of a bright summer's evening... The town was one vast sea of flags and decorations. We went up the hill under the Castle walls slowly, amidst great cheering, and stopped at the bottom of Castle Hill, where there was a crowded stand and every window and balcony were full of people, Chinese lanterns and preparations for illuminations making a very pretty effect. Those who had not come with me were in the front row of the stand.
