Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria) was born on May 24, 1819, and died on January 22, 1901. She ruled as Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from June 20, 1837, until her death. In 1876, she added Empress of India to her title on May 1. Victoria was Prince Edward's daughter, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, who was King George III's fourth son. Her father and grandfather died in 1820, and Victoria was raised under close supervision by her German mother, Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. At 18, she inherited the throne after her three older brothers had all died without leaving any children. The United Kingdom was already a constitutional monarchy where the sovereign held relatively little direct power. Privately, Victoria tried to influence government policy and ministerial appointments. Publicly, she became a national icon known for strict standards of personal morality. A marble bust of Queen Victoria was sculpted by Sir Francis Chantrey in 1841. This sculpture is a replica of Chantrey's original work that was presented to Sir Robert Peel in 1846. The National Portrait Gallery in London has this replica. This object is part of "Scan the World," a non-profit initiative by MyMiniFactory.
