HEAD OF A STATUETTE WITH DOUBLE FEATHER CROWN. 1355 BC, New Kingdom, Dynasty 18. Tiy became the Great Royal Wife of Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep III. Her children included Akhenaten and Tutankhamun, her grandson. In 2010, "The Elder Lady" mummy was discovered in Amenhotep II's tomb (KV35). The artist crafted a realistic face that reflects Tiy's personality: intelligent, determined, and assertive traits also evident in historical-literary accounts. After Amenhotep III's death, while still alive, the head was reworked; originally, silver scarf with gold uraeus was covered by several layers of linen decorated with small faience beads. A crown consisting of sundisc, cow horns, and feathers was added separately. This type of crown is typically worn by goddesses or deified queens. By adding this crown to the statue Akhenaten elevated his mother into the realm of a goddess during her lifetime.
