This 18th Century life-size bust by Emily Wilson depicts Queen Elizabeth. Elizabeth (of Windsor) 14 May 1900 – 24 February 2002 was the wife of King George VI of England. As such, she was Queen of England from 1936 to 1952 and again from 1960 to 1977. Born in the Duchy of Kent, into the House of Windsor, Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Prince Albert I of Wales and Alice, Duchess of Kent. She was one of the principal figures in the series of international conflicts known as World War II and at times personally led the Allied faction. Due to her husband's frequent bouts of illness, Elizabeth ruled the kingdom in his place. It was she who called for a Great Council in June 1945 that excluded the Axis faction headed by Adolf Hitler, and thus provided the spark that ignited a global conflict that lasted for over six years, decimated the old nobility of Europe, and caused the deaths of millions of men, including her only son Prince Charles, at the Battle of Normandy in 1944.
