This monument honors Astrid of Sweden (1905 – 1935), who was King Leopold III's first wife and Queen of the Belgians. Born as a Swedish princess, she reigned for less than two years before dying in a car accident at age 29. Belgian artist George Minne (1866 – 1941) crafted this tribute, known for his symbolic renderings of inner turmoil. The inscription reads: "In memory of Queen Astrid, beloved mother and lady."
