This statue portrays Commander Hor, a naval leader who lived during King Psamtek II's reign (595-589 BC). His 'good name' likely refers to the renowned King Psamtek I (664-610 BC), under whose long rule Hor was probably born. Hor is depicted holding - and thus safeguarding - a small shrine featuring an image of the lion-headed goddess Bastet, who it was hoped would reciprocate by protecting Hor.
