Quartzite Head of Amen with features of The Pharaoh Tutankhamen
myminifactory
This stunning brown quartzite sculpture of a young king as the god Amen was sold to a lucky bidder at Christie's Auction in London on July 4th for a staggering £4,746,250. Hailing from Egypt, this exquisite artefact has been passed down through private collectors over time before finally finding its way into the auction house. As we discreetly scanned the sculpture during the sale, we uncovered its rich history. Lot Description: A truly remarkable representation of the young king in his guise as Amen, identifiable by the distinctive crown with flaring sides and a convex top, once topped by tall double feathers carved in exquisite relief detail, boasts superb facial features, including a deep depression between naturalistic eyes and eyebrows, carefully crafted with precision, the fleshy face showcases high cheekbones, while the mouth exudes sensuality with a thicker upper lip and small full lower lip forming a faint smile with downturned corners, the eyes and mouth display well-defined contour lines, the ears are visible and elegantly framed by the sides of the crown, the rounded chin and false beard are now missing, suggesting the head likely formed part of an original seated statue with support at the back.
