Players take turns picking a piece that the other player must then place on the board. A winner is declared when a player places a piece on the board that forms a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row of four pieces, all of which share the same trait (all short, all round, etc.). Quarto stands out because there's only one set of common pieces - not separate sets for each player.
