Quarto is a captivating board game for two players that originated from the creative mind of Swiss mathematician Blaise Moller in 1991. The game takes place on an ingenious 4x4 board, where sixteen distinct pieces vie for attention. Each piece has unique attributes: tall or short; red, blue (or another set of colors like light- or dark-stained wood); square or circular; and hollow-top or solid-top. As the players engage in turn-based competition, each participant selects a piece which their opponent must strategically place on the board. Victory is achieved by cleverly placing a piece that forms a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row of four pieces sharing an identical characteristic (all short, all circular, etc.). An additional winning strategy found in various editions presents a second chance to succeed: securing four matching pieces within a 2x2 square arrangement. Quarto's exceptional aspect lies in the single set of common pieces shared among both players, resulting in an impartial game experience where no individual advantage is guaranteed.
