The Quad 33 control amplifier, affectionately known as the preamp, was born in the 1960s and remains remarkably relevant today. It still executes its primary function with precision, meeting all expectations of a stereo preamplifier. Nonetheless, the phono preamp component within the amplifier has limitations, specifically that it caters exclusively to moving magnet cartridges. For me, however, the most significant challenge lies in my home's audio setup design, where my record player resides several meters away from the Quad 33. This necessitates the use of excessively long cables, which introduces unwanted capacitance and subsequently dulls the treble response. Consequently, I wish to deploy my external phono preamp closer to the record player while feeding robust line level signals into the Quad. In the 1990s, Quad released a technical briefing detailing how to modify the phono preamp to accommodate line level inputs. Although this adaptation retained all circuitry in operation, effectively transforming it into a unity buffer, I opted for a more streamlined approach. I've completely removed the Quad preamplifier from the circuit, reasoning that its presence becomes unnecessary when dealing with line level inputs.
